On 9th August in the entrance to Federal Parliament, Tony Abbot, the former prime minister, made a statement to the effect that voting against marriage equality was a vote for freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and against political correctness. This is, of course, hysterical nonsense. It betrays a deep-seated homophobia which was inculcated by an irrational type of Christianity, both Catholic and Protestant, that is hateful.
Same-sex attraction is a normal variant of human sexuality, and lesbian and gay people should have the same rights as others in society. Persecuting minority groups has occurred throughout human history and it is now time for genuine Christians to speak out against it and obey Christ’s command to love our neighbours. I encourage everyone to vote for marriage equality in the upcoming voting plebiscite.
